When you think of machine learning, what is the first thing that springs to mind? Most people reference films, something like the human-style robots in iRobot or Ex Machina. And it's true; machine learning is a key element of artificial intelligence. However, its application is much broader than the sci-fi world would have us believe, and it's already being harnessed within the mining industry. Granted, some of these applications are rather mundane by comparison, but the results are no less awe-inspiring.
Behind the scenes, machines are quietly processing terabytes of data at speeds a human brain could never match, identifying patterns using complex mathematical equations and then predicting when certain events or conditions will occur. It's clever stuff, and not a topic that we have addressed in depth before at Mining Magazine, so in a bid to enlighten myself, I turned to a number of industry experts.
